The land wars of the 1860s saw the confiscation of half a million hectares in Waikato. People were driven from their homes. The second Māori king, Tāwhiao, and his followers became refugees in the King Country.

The SPCA says it's fairly common for dogs to be surrendered to the SPCA when they are adolescents, but warns people against adopting a dog without considering how their family environment might change in their pet's lifetime.
