A severe weather system is making its way across the upper North Island today, with Waikato firmly in its path.

MetService meteorologist Katie Hillyer says residents should brace for increasingly persistent and intense rain throughout Thursday, with a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms and dangerous downpours.
