If you haven’t already made contact with your older relatives or neighbour, the holiday season is a perfect opportunity to break the ice.

Sometimes we get caught up in the Christmas rush, and don’t take time to think about people who may be experiencing a much quieter holiday season. Contact with older people can help families to connect with what Christmas is really about, and it’s a great time to explore memories and think about traditions.

We will posting 5 tips leading up to Christmas on how you can connect with your older people this Holiday Season.

4. Pop over with a jar of jam or pickles or your favourite recipe.

If you feel an earthquake that lasts for more than a minute or makes it hard to stand up, don’t wait for an official tsunami warning. Move immediately to the nearest high ground or as far inland as you can. Walk or bike if you can. Stay there until you get the all clear.

Refuse and recycling collections over the festive season will occur one day later than usual.

Residents will need to put their refuse and recycling out one day later than usual for the weeks starting Monday 26 December and Monday 2 January.

By Monday 9 January, services will return to normal.

Council offices are open until 3pm on 23 December and reopen on 4 January.

There is a close-down period for the Council's consents teams.
From 20 December to 10 January, Building and Resource Consents are closed.

From 24 December to 16 January, Land Information Memoranda (LIM) and Development Contribution reconsiderations are closed.

This statutory close-down period means that application processing clocks will stop. If you want an urgent LIM before Christmas it needs to be in before 12pm on 19 December.

Happy holidays everyone.

Water restictions in place

It does seem ridiculous with all the rain we've had lately but it's true. Sprinkler restrictions now in place
. This applies to those on town supply water.

Hamilton, Waikato and Waipa are now all on Water Alert Level 1.

Water Alert Level 1 means using a sprinkler only between 6am – 8am and 6pm – 8pm. Hand-held hosing can be done at any time.

This is the lowest of water restriction levels. The highest being level 4 where no outside water systems are permitted.

The move to Water Alert Level 1 was triggered by a significant increase in water consumption across the region.

Over the last two weeks Hamilton’s water consumption has increased by 20 per cent. Waikato saw an increase of 6 million litres of water and Waipa’s water use increased from 173 to 190 million litres.

In the summer we see outdoor water use increase from 7 per cent to 20 per cent.

How much water we have relies on it raining in the right place.

A lot of people comment on how full the river is and they can see a lot of water. The river may look very full but if there’s no rain it doesn’t stay full for long. We also can’t take all of the water from the river - we’re consented to how much water we’re allowed to take.

I'll keep you posted if and when the water alert level changes.

Until then, good luck with your Christmas shopping!

Surviving the festive season if you have epilepsy.

Maria Lowe from Epilepsy Waikato Charitable Trust

Maria’s ‘Ten-Plus-One Valuable Tips’ on surviving the festive season:
1) If you are prone to photosensitive epilepsy as a result of: flashing fairy lights, sunlight bouncing off the water or through the trees, and even the tv or the computer screen, by covering one eye and turning away from the source of the light this may prevent a seizure from happening. Wearing wrap-around glasses may also help to avoid those glaring sun-rays.
2) Christmas is a stressful time of year and so find out what your stress triggers are and try to avoid them; be it mad late-night shopping trips, crowds of people, hot and sticky weather conditions or just the thought of coming together with family and friends. It is okay to adjust your social calendar in times of stress. Be kind to yourself to avoid unwanted seizures.
3) This festive season can be a time of over-indulgence and so go easy on those highly caffeinated soft drinks and alcohol. These can trigger seizures.
4) Be careful near the barbeque with those hot plates and glowing charcoals. Think safety all the time. There are some helpful tips to be found on ewct.org.nz....
5) Special care needs to be taken around any water activities. New Zealand has particularly high drowning rates and you are especially vulnerable if you have seizures. Swim with a buddy and avoid those activities that put yourself, and others, at risk. Take a look at: ewct.org.nz...
6) Late nights can play havoc on your body’s ability to cope with tiredness. Being tired is a seizure trigger and you may forget to take your medications, which is also a seizure trigger. If you are out late, set an alarm to remind you to take your morning meds.
7) If you take short walks in the sun, don’t forget to ‘slip, slop, slap and wrap’ to avoid getting burnt. If being hot is your seizure trigger, then find ways of keeping cool. You may like to invest in a portable fan.
8) If you are going away on holiday, make sure that you take plenty of your medications. Don’t be caught short without them, and risk becoming vulnerable to having seizures and possibly going into status epilepticus, which is a serious medical condition.
9) Keep these important telephone numbers close at hand.
10) Have fun! Do enjoy yourself, meeting friends and having fun is therapeutic and it makes us feel energised and happy to be alive. If you get a ‘dose of nature’ at the same time, then it doubles your chances of feeling great. Call a friend for a walk or a cuppa.
11) Check us out on Facebook: www.facebook.com...
