Waikato honey producers are calling for a nation-wide ban on the movement of beehives to help prevent the spread of an unwanted predator that could decimate the country’s honey industry.
The yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) is a serious biosecurity concern due to its potential to harm both managed honeybee colonies and wild pollinator populations, both critical to New Zealand’s agriculture and ecosystem health.

Grant Kilby has always loved camping. His mum was director of health at the YMCA, and he would attend YMCA camps in the school holidays. “I think it was mandatory that I was there,” he jokes.
