Appeal for Information: Hamilton homicide investigation

The Team from Waikato Police

Police investigating the violent death of a young man in Hamilton believe motorists or pedestrians may have evidence that is crucial to the investigation.

The 20-year-old victim died in hospital shortly after being critically injured during a fight on Alexandra Street about 12.10am on Sunday. Three other people were treated for moderate-to-serious injuries.

The deceased was celebrating his upcoming birthday when a fight occurred with another group of people, Detective Inspector Daryl Smith said.

“We are speaking to a number of witnesses and people involved in the altercation and are making a number of enquiries to locate the offender and the weapon or weapons that were used.

“At the time, Alexandra Street was busy with cars and pedestrians.

We think it’s highly likely that critical information was recorded on dashcam or cell phones.

“We’re appealing to anyone who was in the area around midnight, if you saw this fight, if you filmed it, or if you have dashcam footage, we need to hear from you as soon as possible.”

Police have created a dedicated web portal where people can upload photos or footage that was taken between 11.30pm on Saturday 19 July to 12.30am on Sunday morning on Alexandra Street and the surrounding areas.

Poll: Have you ever had a Healthy Homes inspection done where you live?

Libby Totton Reporter from Waikato Times

Conflicting Healthy Homes inspection reports are raising concerns about the consistency of standards meant to ensure rental properties are safe and liveable.

In one recent case, a Cambridge rental property underwent two inspections within a week, with significantly different outcomes. The first, arranged by tenant Sara Lewis, identified multiple issues including mould, vermin, and ventilation concerns. A second inspection, arranged by property managers Harcourts, just six days later, found little to criticise.

Have you ever had a Healthy Homes inspection done where you live? Tell us your reasons in the comments (adding NFP if you don't want your words used in print).
