Now more than ever, the fern seems to best capture the spirit of our country. If we look to our Māori roots, we are reminded of the twist or pikorua which resembles two intertwined pikopiko ferns - a fern known for thriving in dark, damp areas of our woods. A reminder that difficult conditions can actually be an opportunity for tremendous growth.
The entanglement of the pikorua also has no beginning or end which is often used to represent an everlasting bond. Although we are all on our own path in life, in the end we always come back together - we are all connected through our interwoven lives.

Tonida (Sp?) is from Sumatra and she and her family (many work at the cafe) are delightful. The toasted cheese scones are very good and so is the coffee. It is … View moreThis is a shout out for the lovely people at Home Harvest Cafe, 3 Plateau Rd, Te Marua, Upper Hutt 5018 open Thursday -Sunday. Tonida (Sp?) is from Sumatra and she and her family (many work at the cafe) are delightful. The toasted cheese scones are very good and so is the coffee. It is definitely worth a trip down the road from town to sit outside under the trees having a yarn with the locals. Visit them on Thursday and Friday if you can as they could use more business then. It is a great place to stop if you are cycling the Rimutakas or walking in Kaitoke forest. They are renovating a cottage to take guests and it would be a lovely spot to stay.
The Remutaka Hill Road is totally closed for essential road works from 9pm - 4am until Friday 29 March.
Be prepared for any early/late departures or arrivals you have (from planes or ferries) between Wairarapa and Wellington
