Seventy five hollow steel tubes have been sunk into the ground at depths of between 28-35 metres to create the piles. These were then excavated before the remaining holes were filled with steel and concrete to form the piles.
Trust chairman Grant Faber said the piles all reach down to the bedrock which lies beneath the town basin.
"The piles are the feet that will anchor the building to the ground but the connection is symbolic too. Hundertwasser's vision for the site is now physically connected to where the centre will soon stand," Faber said.
" Everyone has been pleasantly surprised with how smoothly it has gone."
The next stage in construction is to form and pour the concrete bond beams which link all the piles together before installing sub-surface services and then the concrete slab early in the new year.
The centre is due to be completed late 2020.

Hukerenui School in Northland is one of these five schools. They want to transform their western boundary fence area by planting bee-friendly trees and plants and provide a habitat for the skink population to create an area that will not only be fun, but a student led educational learning space.
“We want our school to lead the future in incorporating outdoor learning into school life, which can be managed and taught by students, leading future students in their wake” says Jodie Baldwin, teacher at Hukerenui School.
The joint initiative between the Mazda Foundation and Project Crimson Trust helps to transform schools’ outdoor education spaces through creating fantastic open air learning zones full of native trees and shrubs.
The remaining finalists will receive $500 towards their projects.

Emergency Mobile Alerts are not meant to replace other emergency alerts, or the need to take action after natural warnings.
You still need to be prepared for an emergency and you should not wait to get an alert before you act. If you feel your life is in danger, don’t wait for an official warning. Take immediate action.
