Central city population exceeds pre-quake numbers as homes go up

It has taken more than a decade, but Christchurch’s central city population has finally passed pre-quake numbers thanks to record home building.
The latest Statistics New Zealand estimate puts the population inside the city’s four avenues at 8080. This compares with about 8000 pre-quake and 5000 in 2013, but remains well short of the city council’s 20,000 target.
After a slow start to the central city residential rebuild, the real estate boom has led to developers competing for central city land, and selling out before construction begins. Almost all the new homes are in multi-unit blocks. Read more here.
