It initially showed silent films, but was upgraded to show "talkies" in 1929. During the early 1930s it became the "All-British Theatre", showing only British films. 🇬🇧
The cinema was dwarfed by the neighbouring Government Life insurance built during the 1960s, and then in 1986 it was finally demolished to make way for the unremarkable "Crystal Plaza" shopping mall. Today, the site is part of the Te Pae complex; the iconic 32m tower stood roughly where the Cathedral Square entrance to Te Pae is today.
All of this was before my time, but it's been fascinating reading about how Cathedral Square was not only a public transport hub, a religious centre, but also an entertainment hub, with theatres all around the outside.
You can read all about the Crystal Palace in the new Wikipedia article!

possible place to have been found is Northlands Mall.
Between BNZ, and the car parks along the left hand side of the pedestrian crossing in the undercover carpark. not a valuable ring monetarily but personal and sentimental value.

We’ve been working with NZTA and Christchurch City Council to push for safety improvements — especially at the Burwood Rd/QEII Drive/Travis Road and Burwood/Mairehau Roads intersections, as well as directly outside of school.
One of the biggest roadblocks is that both NZTA and CCC need more data to back up making changes.
This is where you can help!
If you’ve witnessed or been involved in any accidents or near misses in these areas, please email us at:
office@waitakiri.school.nz
Or please phone our school office 03 383 2736 anytime (you can leave a message).
Your experiences can help us make a strong case for change.
Thanks so much for your support — every bit of info helps make our roads safer for our kids.
