A total fire ban is being put in place across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula as the fire risk in the area escalates.

A restricted fire season has been in place since mid January but with the countryside drying out and more warm weather predicted, Christchurch City Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Darrin Woods has decided to declare a prohibited fire season.

The total fire ban will come into effect as of midnight on Saturday, February 11 and will remain in force until the fire risk lessens.

Mr Woods said the current conditions in the Christchurch City Council Rural Fire District were somewhat unusual for this time of the year.

“While the Port Hills and some other parts of the city appear very brown there is still a deceptive tinge of green across the area. However, the amount of fuel available to burn is substantial and any ignitions under warm windy conditions are likely to be successful and sustained.

“Imposing the prohibition is a proactive measure to try and reduce the risk of unwanted and potentially damaging fires,’’ Mr Woods said.

During the prohibition the lighting of all fires in the open air is banned, including barbecues and other such devices which use or contain solid fuels. Gas fuelled barbecues and gas cookers can still be used.

Mr Woods said some special permits for fires might be issued during the prohibition but they would typically be limited to biosecurity and public health related matters. Such requests would be carefully considered on a case by case basis.

He urged anyone who spotted a fire or smoke to call 111 immediately as early detection could minimise the damage.

We have the serious job of making skin care for people with skin problems or very sensitive skin. Our makeup range adapts the same principles. We have developed makeup that doesn’t damage our skin but provides you with a natural and healthy coverage- without the synthetic chemicals and is vegan and cruelty free.

So who can use our makeup? Everyone! Dusty Girls is designed for women of all ages and skin types and will work to enhance your natural beauty.

Our Natural Vegan Lipsticks are made using a blend of mica's for a highly pigmented and vibrant colour, alongside edible ingredients such as Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter and Vitamin E to lock in moisture. With four shades of vegan lipstick available, there is a colour to suit all skin tones. To ensure that our Vegan Lipsticks are completely natural and edible, we steer clear of lead and coal tar derived colours along with parabens and synthetics dyes, which are commonly used in commercial lipsticks, and can be damaging to our bodies and also cause irritation.

Our Mineral Foundation Powders are lightweight and filler free, which means you can get a natural coverage without the chemicals. Many foundation powders on the market contain ingredients such as silicone, talc, bismuth and UV filters, just to name a few. These ingredients can often cause congestion and irritation to those with sensitive or troubled skin and don’t comply with the Dusty Girls philosophy. Our range of Mineral Foundation is designed for all skin types, but particularly beneficial to those with irritable skin, along with individuals looking for a healthy and natural alternative. For this reason, we use a combination of mica's along with zinc oxide, so that you are able to achieve a beautiful and even coverage while protecting your skin from sun damage and pigmentation.

With a selection of seven easy-to-blend shades, there is a colour suitable for all skin tones.

As mentioned in the givealittle we have had a $17,000 vet bill for January and am asking if anyone can donate a little monies to the cause.  Every $5 + you donate to givealittle (they will provide a receipt) where you can claim back 30% in your year end tax calculation.  Small donations by a lot of people all add up to a lot.  This is the silly kitten session and hence costs are always high at this time.

We are busy collecting free fruit and jars and making jams/chutney's and fresh tomato and plum sauce to sell at our stalls and making crafts (custions and cat beds etc) with donated goods.  So we are trying to fundraise anyway we can with lots of volunteer support.

We will have a stall at the Sumner Market this Sunday the 12th and the Halswell Market on the 26th so would love to see you.

I have attached two recent articles about what we do and how we help stray cats and the resulting kittens that come from unsprayed animals.

Any questions please go to our website or pm me and ask.

Chapel of the Waves to replace quake-damaged union church in New Brighton

An intimate chapel drawing inspiration from landmarks like the Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo, will be built in New Brighton this year.

The Chapel of the Waves will incorporate a wave-design feature roof – a salute to the beach zone where it will stand on the site of the old New Brighton Union Church in Union St which was demolished in September 2011 after Canterbury's earthquakes.

Minister Mark Gibson said the new "small but iconic chapel" in Union St would reflect New Brighton.

It will have seating for 40 people, and interior symbolism will strongly reflect the natural features of the beachside strip, including, for example, godwits.

"We've drawn inspiration from other iconic chapels such as Lake Tekapo's, also a small chapel at Hororata and the chapel at Arthur's Pass," Gibson said.

The $1 million-plus development will include an adjacent community house, with a designated hospitality area and administration space, which will provide an eastern hub for two staff of the Christchurch Methodist Mission.

"It's a very exciting project. There will be a huge celebration to which the community will be invited," Gibson said.

The decision to build a chapel rather than an all-purpose hall was driven by local residents and parishioners.

"They very clearly wanted a sacred place, set aside for the purpose."

The chapel and community house will be built with an insurance payout and financial support from the Central South Island Methodist Synod.

Ground work is about to start and construction will continue through to early next year.

The complex has been designed by PXA Architects. The building contractor is Avon Dickie, and the project manager is Tripro (Tailored Project Solutions).

The work had been delayed by resource consent issues due to changed requirements for floor levels in flood plain areas.

Raised floors would mean "a lot of ramping" to allow maximum accessibility for wheelchair users, Gibson said.

Existing hall facilities will also be upgraded to ensure they are more user-friendly for the community.

The Purple Door Boutique op-shop, which has operated from a separate building on site, will be relocated into the new community house.

Two distinguished international concert pianists will perform and teach in Christchurch at the end of this month.

The visit of Santiago-based Edith Fischer, protege of Claudio Arrau – renowned as one of the supreme keyboard masters of the century – and her husband Jorge Pepi-Alos, is being hailed as a "very important event", especially for the musical and cultural life of the city.

Fischer has played under the direction of some of the greatest conductors of these times, notably with Erich Kleiber, Paul Ketzski, Sir John Barbirolli among other distinguished directors.

She has also performed at festivals such as Salzburg, Gstaad, Montreal, Stresa, Paris and Flanders.

Pepi-Alos, composer and professor at the University of Chile, studied piano with Fischer and attended the Menuhin Academy in Gdstaad (chamber music). He went on to co-found the Bionay chamber music festival with Fischer. Pepi-Alos went on to win a series of illustrious international prizes.

The couple were invited to Christchurch by dazzling young pianist and composer Tony Chen Lin, who has been regularly invited to perform as young guest artist at the 'Semaine Internationale de Piano et de musique de chambre' in Bionay, Switzerland by festival founder and mentor Edith Fischer.

"This will be a rare opportunity to witness two world-class musicians in performance and working with young New Zealand talent," Lin said.

The couple will give piano master classes in the chamber at The Piano: Centre for Music and Arts on Sunday February 26. 1pm- 6pm. Admission is free.

On Monday, February 27, Fischer and Pepi-Alos will perform in The Piano's concert hall at 7.30pm, the works of Schumann, Brahms, Ravel, VillaLobos, Jenny McLeod, and Pepi-Alos. Adults $30, students $10.
