Russell Coutts' sailing series with massive global TV audience may land in Lyttelton
A major international sailing event attracting a global broadcast audience estimated at quarter of a billion viewers is on the cusp of being confirmed for Lyttelton Harbour in Christchurch.
The hugely popular SailGP (grand prix) series, featuring a new Kiwi team launched by Olympic and world champion sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, could hit the Lyttelton waters in January 2022.
The races feature foiling catamarans, which can hit speeds of up to 50 knots and have hydrofoils to lift their hulls above the water to reduce drag.
Loren Heaphy, destination and attraction manager at ChristchurchNZ, the city's economic development and promotional agency, confirmed negotiations to host the event were taking place.
