Work starts on new Canterbury nature reserve and sports park
Workers have broken ground on a new $13 million sports park and nature reserve on the outskirts of Christchurch.
The 22-hectare reserve will be on Birchs Rd between Prebbleton and Lincoln, and will feature new bike tracks, sports fields, stretches of native bush, and a dog park, to be constructed in stages over the next five years.
Two Selwyn companies have this week started building the first stage of the park, a 10ha area expected to open to the public in spring 2022.
It will be made up of off-road and sealed bike tracks, complete with jumps and a snake run – similar to tracks at Bottle Lake Forest and the Christchurch Adventure Park.
There will be also be a dog park with an area set aside for smaller pooches, and three full and one half-sized sports fields, with lighting.
