Neighbourly's Good News

Paul from Carterton District

A while ago l ran out of fuel near the summit of the Remutaka Hill ( due to a faulty fuel gauge, not stupidity on my part). I set off towards Featherston with my jerry can, intending to stop and stick my thumb out at the next suitable pull over area. I rounded the corner and found a car already waiting for me and l was very grateful for a ride into town. On my return trip a had my thumb out for a couple of hundred metres when woman with 3 kids stopped for me. I chatted casually with her and the kids on the way up the hill, but the subject of their destination never arose. She deposited me back at my stranded car and l expressed my gratitude. I was, however, gobsmacked to see her then turn around and head back to Featherston. Seems she wasn't heading to the Hutt at all but just a local going about her local business. I shall never forget that act of kindness.

Some New Zealanders are re-imagining funerals by making their own coffin or having a relaxed ceremony at home. Would you want a less traditional funeral? Share your thoughts below.
