It is a rule you should follow even if you don’t have braces because it will protect your teeth and prevent you from biting yourself during strenuous sports like rugby, football, basketball, hockey or boxing. Mouth guards can also help minimise concussions by stabilising your mouth during contact sports.

Braces are made to fit comfortably in your mouth, but if you get hit with a ball or the shoulder of a teammate, they can do some serious damage, so the mouth guard is vital whenever you head out to play.

The current vests - which were introduced in 2006 - are stab-proof, but special vests are worn by any officers involved in firearms call-outs.
They have passed their warranty, but remain "safe and fit for purpose", says Police Commissioner Mike Bush.
