Countdown shelf-stackers and Covid masks

Anthony from Mount Eden

Recently, there is the extremely worrying fact that the majority of Countdown shelf stackers do not wear Covid masks properly, and in many cases do not wear them at all — at Mt Eden, Mt Roskill, and Grey Lynn branches, in my recent experience.
From the government's website:
"At Alert Level 2, 3 and 4 you must wear a face covering if you have any customer contact when you are at work.”
It is impossible to move down the aisles without passing well within 2 metres, and usually within 1 metre, of these stackers.
One evening, out of 8 shelf-stackers in Countdown Mt Eden, two had masks entirely under their chins, mouth and nose completely exposed. Four were wearing them covering mouth only and not the nose, making them equally worthless. Only two wore them properly.
Another evening, I approached a shelf stacker to ask him to move the trolleys that were preventing me getting to the products I wish to buy, and I asked him to put his mask on properly while we were talking. As soon as he thought I wasn’t looking, he took the mask off again.
In Countdown Mt Roskill, I asked a young shelf stacker where his mask was, and he gestured to his pocket. When I pointed out his legal obligation to wear it, he simply refused.
I have raised this issue with various assistant managers in each of these branches, for some three or four weeks now, as well as online — and still nothing has changed. I know that at least two, if not all three, of these branches have been "locations of interest”; that is, that people infected with Covid have been in the shops.
Life is dangerous enough now, without Countdown staff and management not taking the problem of Covid seriously. Not good enough.
This is not a problem at either New World or Pak’n’Save, in my experience at least — which is why I'm doing the majority of my shopping at those chains now, even though they are much further away from my home. At least this partially resolves the issue for me personally — but I am seriously concerned about everyone who enters the supermarkets, not just myself.
I am even more seriously concerned that Countdown management doesn't appear to give a damn about enforcing the law in their premises, despite multiple complaints online as well as instore.
If this worries you as it does me, may I suggest you post something like this in your social media, and write to other media too.
Thanks!
