Countdown is removing them from all stores and replacing them with a range of alternatives including bamboo, metal and paper straws.

The supermarket's move is expected to remove 11.6 million straws from circulation and the waste stream each year. WOW.

Do you think other NZ supermarkets should follow suit?

If the warranty has ended, it doesn't mean your rights have!

A warranty is extra to the protections in the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) and can’t override or replace these. This means a retailer can't just say you're out of luck because the warranty period has ended.

The CGA says that products have to be of an acceptable quality which means they must be fit for purpose (or do what they're made to do), last for a reasonable amount of time, be safe, and be free from any minor defects. What is “acceptable quality” is based on what you could reasonably expect taking into account things like the nature of the goods, what you paid for them, and any particular statements made about the goods.

If you have a problem with something you’ve bought and the warranty period has ended, you might still be entitled to have it repaired or replaced. Check out our information on your rights as a consumer or phone CAB on 0800 367 222.

Hi neighbours,

Is the solution to Auckland's traffic problem in our pockets? Our National Correspondent has been investigating how the movements of your smartphone are being tracked, collected and sold to government agencies. To read more about this, click here.

The location data Google and Spark collect from our smartphones is being studied to try and solve Auckland's biggest transport problems.

For example, some data is being used to help monitor the performance of new state highway infrastructure or upgrades, including measuring travel times through the Waterview Tunnel.

What are your thoughts on this? Were you aware of it? Do you think a solution to your city's roads can be found in the data? Let us know in the replies!

The evolution of the New Zealand state house

Housing New Zealand

The state houses of the 1930s and 40s are part of the fabric of New Zealand society. Hundreds of thousands of us have lived in one, or next to one. They have a reputation for having “good bones” and, today, they’re often seen as tidy, blank canvases for home buyers to breathe new life into.

Auckland Transport announced its plan to introduce a new speed limit that would cover an area bounded by the central city motorways. The proposal came in a bid to make the streets safer for growing numbers of pedestrians, cyclists and residents.

Town centre roads like Broadway in Newmarket and Tamaki Dr in Mission Bay and St Heliers will have their speed limit reduced to 30km/h or 40km/h.

Peter Carruthers said some parts such as lower Queens Street and Quay Street around the ferry terminal should have the reduced limit, but it should not be broadly applied across the whole CBD area. "Not Fanshaw, Hobson and Nelson St which are major arteries in and out of the city." Town centre roads like Broadway in Newmarket and Tamaki Drive in Mission Bay and St Heliers will have their speed limit reduced to 30km/h or 40km/h.
