Water supply manager Priyan Perera says the water levels in the dams rose significantly overnight, with Cosseys and Hayes Creek dams now full and spilling.
“Cosseys Dam rose 17% as a result of this rainfall and is now spilling,” says Perera.
“When our dams reach capacity, they are designed to spill into an engineered spillway. When this occurs, the volume of water being released is simply reflecting natural flows.
“I’m aware that some local residents are concerned we are actively releasing water from the Hunua dams, resulting in downstream flooding. This is most certainly not the case. Unlike hydroelectric dams, our dams do not have release gates – as a water supplier, our aim is to store as much water as possible. The four large dams were not full prior to this event, meaning they have been able to capture and contain a lot of the water - minimising the scale of potential flooding downstream.”
The storm has not comprised the structural integrity of the dams.
The high volume of rain has affected the clarity of the water (turbidity) in the dams. This change in water quality means that Watercare must carefully managing the incoming flows and treatment processes at Ardmore Water Treatment Plant.

Are you 65+, live in the Franklin Local Board area, and have a tale to tell about your life that might surprise a younger listener?
Linda Grigg has been an Accredited Visitor with Age Concern Counties Manukau for more than two years. The Franklin Local Board has approved a grant for an arts project Linda will be managing, called 'You Might Be Surprised to Know'. She says, "Often when society looks at an older person, that is all they see. They do not know the rich life experiences that person has had, and continues to have. By telling snippets of older people's life stories, this project aims to break those stereotypes and to remind us all of the uniqueness of every individual, and of their value to our communities, regardless of age."
Linda is seeking participants willing to be interviewed and photographed. The stories/photos will be published online (probably on Facebook) and in an exhibition to the public in June 2017. This is a voluntary project, so no payment will be made for the stories/photos.
If you are interested in being a participant or want to know more, please contact Linda on surprisedtoknow@gmail.com or phone 021 145 1304. Please note that interviewees must currently live in the Franklin Local Board area to be eligible to participate.

I'm Joseph, from Vietnam. I'm new to this area, just 4 weeks.
I'm working on a dairy farm in Clevedon-Takanini Rd, Clevedon.
I'm looking for someone who can help me with my driving practice. As I just have Learner License, I have my own car, I can come and pick you up, so I need someone who has at least 2-year full license driving with.
I enjoy traveling , going to the beaches, going fishing, playing sports... and love talking and sharing experience.
I can supply dinners, I'm good at cooking.
Or any offers like house cleaning, gardening, cooking,...
The thing is that I'm able to drive, I'm still driving around this area (by my own), going to church and supermarket every Sunday, just wanna make it legally, I need more practice to ready for Restricted test and I would like to make friends.
Thanks for reading!
God bless!

Eastern Courier reporter Liu Chen and the athletes of the International Women's Association NZ have done us proud, too, as they complete their training and line up in the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays run fun on Sunday, story page 8. Ladies, run the race of your lives!
What a tradition Round the Bays is. As an Aucklander I'm proud to know it endures - like Santa parades - as a true Auckland event on the cultural calendar.
Barrel-chested, straight-shooting Lydiard, who lived in Clovelly Road, Bucklands Beach, made Round the Bays possible. Decades earlier, the legendary runner and coach - of Sir Peter Snell, Sir Murray Halberg, John Davies, Barry Magee, Bill Baillie and many more - had scientifically proven by endless running and medical testing that jogging was good for one's health and well-being.
That started a craze that saw many out pounding the pavements. Round the Bays was created to bring them together once a year to celebrate the joy of running in a beautiful place. Pace yourselves...
