Manurewa netball president awarded for ‘selfless’ contributions

Ripu Bhatia Reporter from Manukau Courier

The president of a south Auckland netball club, who spends 20 hours a week coaching while pregnant, has been awarded for her contributions.

Motor Chicks Netball Club president Sandina Cameron said she was “shocked” to be honoured as an ANZ local legend.

“I cried because I’m usually the one who does the nominating. For somebody to actually notice me, I wasn’t expecting it,” she said.

Cameron spends 20 hours a week coaching netball, on top of studying and working full time.

She is also pregnant and due in September, but said she has no signs of slowing down.

Her colleague describes her as having a “heart for the people, the community and the game”.

Cameron will receive the lease of an indoor training venue and clubroom valued around $12,000 for her club for the next three seasons.

“It’ll take so much pressure off and means that we don’t have to fundraise,” Sandina said.

“It’ll keep the fees down for the parents too. Being in a low socio-economic area the parents and community will appreciate that.”

ANZ Local Legends recognises the thousands of unpaid volunteers who support New Zealand’s netball players.
