Watercare holds public tours of Lower Huia Dam, Waitakere Dams on 22 March

Maxine Clayton from Watercare

World Water Day is coming up (22 March) and to celebrate, Watercare is holding guided tours of Lower Huia Dam in the Waitakere Ranges and giving visitors the opportunity to see inside the pump station and find out how it works.

Watercare has five dams in the Waitakere Ranges, which together supply about 20 per cent of Auckland’s drinking water. Built in 1971, the Lower Huia Dam covers 50 hectares and holds the most water of any of our western dams. The tours will provide spectacular views of the reservoir, surrounding bush and a glimpse of the Manukau Harbour.

Staff from Watercare’s headworks team will be taking the tours. Their work is varied and is done in all sorts of extreme weather and challenging conditions. They have great stories to tell about various environmental projects including the “trap and haul programme,” which involves helping eels to migrate to Tonga to breed, as well as a trial to combat algae using ultrasonic sound waves.

The tours will last approximately 45 minutes and will take place every half hour between 9.30am and 3pm. Bookings are essential. There is no age limit but for safety reasons, a 1: 2 ratio of adults to children is required.

Tour spots are limited, so book early: Email open.day@water.co.nz or call 09 539 8425.

Details are also avaiable on the website: www.watercare.co.nz...

We want to hear from you: would you be keen to switch to a fortnightly rubbish collection, or do you prefer things as they are?
