Housing our growing population inevitably means building more houses in closer proximity to one another. It’s a big change for Kiwis who grew up with the idea of the ‘quarter acre paradise’. But research shows that residents of higher density suburbs actually tend to be happier and healthier. Read more here

Historically, car and other crime spikes from mid-July to early September and police are committed to this prevention-focused operation to address this peak period. Police will be targeting high crime areas such as carparks, shopping malls, gas stations and railway stations and known priority crime offenders.
Vehicle crime will be a particular focus for us and we know the most common types of cars targeted by thieves in this area are:
- Mazda Demio
- Subaru Legacy
- Mazda Familia
- Subaru Impreza.
Seventy per cent of vehicles that are stolen in the Auckland City District are recovered, however, the Police aim is to reduce the offending occurring in the first place. Operation Pencil will conclude on August 24, 2018.
More information at the Police website.

That often meant eating $1 loaves of bread for dinner to ensure she could cover healthy meals and medical bills for her children, aged 4 and 6. "You never dreamed to be in this position," Samantha said. "I know there's a lot of people worse off than us and I'm really lucky to have a roof over our head and to provide food. But there's a lot of Kiwis struggling." Variety said it had received a strong response from Kiwis who had read about Samantha's story. So far, 24 more children on its waiting list had been sponsored and 75 families had signed up to make donations. There were 400 children on the waiting list as of last week. They also received offers of gifts, donations and a five-day holiday at Piha camping ground. Samantha had said she dreamed of having the time and money to take her family to the beach.
Variety, which is appealing for donations from outside its existing donor base for the first time, said it was heartened by the generosity shown by Kiwi families. Though it would love to pass on all of the gifts it did not have the resources to handle physical items and could not give out families' personal details for privacy reasons. It recommended making a donation via its website.
WINTER STRUGGLE
================
Variety is not alone in noticing increased demand from New Zealand families for help with clothing, power bills and heating. A survey by the Salvation Army released today showed that half of New Zealanders were going without heating because of the cost. One in 10 were using the oven to heat their home.The survey – which was not limited to Salvation Army clients – also said 37 per cent of Kiwis were skipping meals because they could not afford them and 45 per cent were avoiding the doctor when sick.

Papers released under the Official Information Act outline a novel way of paying for the tunnel and previous scenarios for a partial sale of council-owned Watercare. "Using a SPV to deliver the central interceptor will be regarded by Aucklanders as (Auckland Mayor) Phil Goff and (Transport Minister) Phil Twyford inventing new ways to tax families to flush the toilet," said National MP Judith Collins. Both Collins and Manurewa-Papakura councillor Daniel Newman have called the new charge for the central interceptor a "toilet tax". In a letter sent to Goff and councillors, Newman said: "I fear the proposed SPV will likely be judged as a form of privatisation to repay debt holders that will not win public support.

A spokesman for Fu Wah told the company had got approval from Immigration NZ to bring in 138 tradespeople and did not think that number would be increased. The tradespeople will work alongside the 300-odd local workers already involved, from October through until February. The fit-out of the hotel is set to be completed by March next year, however, the spokesman says the final completion of the whole project will be later as the commissioning and pre-opening requirements cannot happen until after the fit-out. "We are grateful for the approval as the workforce shortages we were facing would have caused more delay. "Auckland is, as we know, in desperate need for more hotel rooms in the CBD, especially five star, so we will be bringing another 195 rooms into supply next year."
