However I balance this with the Waitakeres being our source of Te Whare Tapa Wha. (Maori model of well being). When hiking in the Waitakeres we receive Te Taha Wairua (spiritual health), Te Taha Whanau (family health, hiking in our community group), Te Taha Hinengaro (psychological health), and Te Taha Tinana (physical health). These are all essential to us living under the pressure that Auckland city brings. With all due respect, in 25 years of tramping, we have never seen a single Maori actually out on these tracks or any other tracks in NZ for that matter (I hope I am wrong!). My point in saying this is that there is a lack of consideration of the impact on the people actually using the Waitakeres, and gaining their health from being out there. Clearly if the Rahui was heeded, the tracks would all be gone within 10 years, so no one would be able to appreciate these beautiful trees anyway. I am asking the Council to come up with a strategy that is beneficial to all!
