Aotearoa New Zealand is aiming to be predator-free in 2050 to ensure our islands' unique species of birds, frogs, lizards and plants can thrive.

New Zealand has among the highest proportions of threatened or at-risk species in the world, and around 25 million native birds are killed by introduced predators every year. But it's not all bad news - when predators are removed or controlled, nature bounces back fast. We’ve already seen it happening in many parts of the country!

People all over Aotearoa are doing their bit - setting traps in their backyards, planting natives, volunteering, or donating. You can too! Backyard trapping is one example of effective individual action.

What do you think? Can we reach our Predator Free target in 2050?

🌧️ Rainy Sunday plans? We've got you covered.
Join us at The Vic this Sunday 28 September at 4pm for a special play reading of Shelter by Elspeth Sandy. Tickets just $20

A mother and son, out on a weekend tramp in the bush, are forced to take shelter during a storm. As the play unfolds, and hidden family truths are revealed, the tension generated by their strange surroundings fuses with the tension in their relationship to bring the action to a shocking climax.

There is a great cast - Alison Bruce and Joe Dekkers-Reihana and the reading is directed by Andrew Foster.

Elspeth’s stage play, The Body Politic, which had a first reading at the Vic two years ago, played to capacity houses at Circa Theatre last year.

Her latest novel - A Gap in Nature - will be published in November.

I'm planning to run FOUR MEDIA-BASED WORKSHOPS with an early November start. Dependent on interest, the workshops could be held IN-PERSON at my home near Devonport.
Or: ONLINE, through Google Meet or Microsoft Teams.

The course will include free induction material. The workshops have been well-researched. I will have them peer-reviewed.

REFER TO THE ATTACHED PDF on what will be covered in the four workshops, and the cost of each, which is: $60 per workshop- I hope I've kept this as reasonable as possible in this current economic climate!
*NOTE* I'm open to the idea of people paying what fee they can fairly afford, instead of the set rate.

My background is as a sports freelance writer. I have been published by Stuff, the Herald and newsroom.co.nz (LockerRoom). I also teach English to second language learners.

I worry for the future of news, around issues of integrity and ethics...

My goal is that workshop participants will care enough about the subject of news to want to become active in protecting its value and trust. And for participants to perhaps consider becoming involved in the media field through freelancing or more.

Any questions, most welcome.
