Chelsea Estate Heritage Park, Birkenhead:
A major stormwater project will be taking place from late August until the end of next year. These works include:
* Installation of new pipelines ranging in diameter from 355mm to 1950 mm.
* Diversion of existing pipelines in Huka Road and Rawene Road.
* Abandonment of non-usable pipelines.
* Construction of a new outfall structure in Duck Creek.
Why Are the Works Needed?
The existing pipelines running under the former landfill of the Chelsea Sugar Refinery are in poor condition, and cannot be repaired. Additionally, surface runoff from the Huka Road and Rawene Road stormwater drain flows over the former landfill and may cause slope instability during large rain events. Auckland Council has considered a number of options for rectifying these issues, and determined that the current option is the most feasible and cost effective.
How will the work affect you?
Major impacts during construction will be limited to the upstream and downstream ends of the pipeline alignment due to the trenchless pipeline installation method chosen. These impacts will include the closure of some areas of the Chelsea Heritage Park. These will be fenced off during the construction and no public access will be available to these areas.
* Working hours within the reserve are between 7:30am and 6pm Monday to Friday. If work is required outside these hours, affected residents will be notified in advance. Traffic management will be present along Colonial Road for much of
the works along with Huka Road and Rawene Roads for some of the works. Construction traffic will increase the number of vehicles using Colonial Drive.
* Where possible, park access and walkways will remain open during construction. The site access road within the reserve will be fenced off for health and safety reasons, with pedestrian crossings provided at all times.
* Access to private properties will not be affected.
* Full reinstatement will be made to all areas affected upon completion of the works.

Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
