A phone scam is re-emerging with cold calling swindlers claiming to be Police officers.

New Zealand Police are advising the public to be vigilant, after a handful of reports have been made in recent days. Unfortunately, at least two elderly Aucklanders have been conned out of tens of thousands of dollars.

Waitematฤ CIBโ€™s Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting says scammers are cold calling, mainly on landlines, and claim to be a Police officer.โ€œThey will also provide a fake ID or badge number to make their call seem legitimate,โ€ he says.โ€œThis person will carry on and provide a reason for their call: either they are investigating fake bank notes, or that your credit card has been cloned.

โ€œAs part of this scam, they will ask you to withdraw money from a nearby bank to be collected or ask you to provide further financial or banking information to aid their investigation.โ€

Be aware: this is a scam call.

Police are investigating two reports this week, in south Auckland and the North Shore, where two people have fallen victim to the scam. โ€œBoth victims withdrew cash from a bank and handed this over to someone who arrived at their door to collect it under the fake cover story,โ€ Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says.โ€œThese victims have had their good-will and trust trodden on by these scammers.โ€

Investigation staff have ensured there is support available for the victims. Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says: โ€œScammers have no ethics whatsoever and will take any opportunity to try and con you.โ€œThese scams take many forms, and the offenders trick people under a variety of guises or storylines.โ€

There are occasions where legitimate Police officers will contact people as part of their duties, he says.

Police are asking the community to be aware and take the opportunity to spread the word amongst friends and family members. โ€œWe are particularly keen to ensure elder family members are aware of what is happening,โ€ Detective Senior Sergeant Bunting says. โ€œIf anyone receives a call of this nature, hang up.

โ€œIf you have had the unfortunate position of being a victim to this scam and have not reported this, we encourage you to report this to Police.โ€

Please remember:
- Police will never call to ask you for bank details, pin numbers or passwords
- Police do not offer prize money
- Police will not ask you to go to a bank to withdraw money
- If you receive a call out of the blue of a similar nature: challenge the caller to identify themselves, ask for their details.
- Hang up, contact 105 to verify the ID and request the officer to contact you
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

๐Ÿ”Š Important Update from the IRD on Bright-line Property Rules ๐Ÿ”Š

Starting 1 July 2024, significant changes are coming to the bright-line property rule. Here's what you need to know:

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Key Date to Remember:
โœ” From 1 July 2024, the bright-line property rule applies only if you sell a property within 2 years of purchasing it.

๐Ÿ“… Selling Before 1 July 2024:
The current bright-line periods still apply:
โž– Properties bought between 29 March 2018 and 26 March 2021: Bright-line period is 5 years.
โž– Properties bought on or after 27 March 2021: Bright-line period is 5 years for qualifying new builds and 10 years for other residential properties.

๐Ÿก Selling Your Main Home:
The bright-line property rule generally does not apply if you sell your main home. This remains unchanged, but the criteria are specific:
โž– More than 50% of the property's area must be used as your main home.
โž– The property must be used as your main home for more than 50% of the time you owned it.
โž– If you build on the land, the construction period does not count towards determining your usage for the main home exclusion.

๐Ÿ”„ New Rollover Relief Rules for Associated Persons:
โœ” The rollover relief rules are extended to cover transactions between associated persons:
โœ” Includes associated companies, relatives (within 2 degrees of relationship), trusts and their beneficiaries, partners and partnerships, and look-through companies and their owners.
โœ” Both the transferor and transferee must be associated for 2 years before the transfer.
โœ” Rollover relief can be claimed once in any 2-year period.

For specific accounting or taxation advice, please contact your accountant.
