My new birdbath(s), and the view of them from my front doorstep. =D

Sharon from Te Atatu South

The new terracotta one I got from Bunnings Glenfield for $20 as the pedestal was missing (marked down from $44! That's ok - I only wanted the top part! STILL holds a decent amount of water) and beside it is the MUCH smaller, very tiny shallow concrete one (sadly, it doesn't hold much water - not more than about a cupful I should think =P ) the landlord gave me, as he reversed over the old one (which was an old planter with Blu Tack in the hole in the bottom to stop the water leaking out). I told him NOT to reverse over this new one, as I had to go ALL the way to Bunnings Glenfield to get it, as they were the only ones that had it! All the other birdbaths were $70 or more each. =P Anyway, hopefully this pale smaller one the landlord gave me, and the much brighter orange colour of the terracotta one I just bought, will make them MORE visible so that he does not reverse over them again.....sigh. =P IN the meantime, the birds are enjoying their new terracotta birdbath very much, and the first one to try it out was a mynah. =D ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!! =D

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!

The gift of giving …?

Markus from Green Bay

The author of “The Gift of the Magi” is O. Henry, a pseudonym for William Sydney Porter.

“The Gift of the Magi” is a poignant short story about a young couple, Jim and Della, who are deeply in love but financially struggling. With Christmas approaching and limited money, each decides to sacrifice their most prized possession to buy a meaningful gift for the other. Della sells her beautiful long hair to buy a platinum chain for Jim’s watch, while Jim sells his grandfather’s watch to buy a set of combs for Della’s hair. In the end, their love and sacrifice underscore the true spirit of giving during the holiday season.

🤔

I would say the story underscores the stupidity of Xmas gifts … after all, it is not YOUR birthday, so how about donating something to good causes and otherwise enjoying being together?
