Hi Neighbours!

The Minister for Seniors Tracey Martin has released the new strategy for our ageing population, Better Later Life – He Oranga Kaumātua 2019 to 2034.

Like the rest of the developed world, New Zealand has an ageing population. This means there are some things we must consider and prepare for as a country.

Better Later Life takes a fresh look at what is required to ensure New Zealand is a great place to age and achieve the vision of making sure older people lead valued, connecting and fulfilling lives.

The strategy's key areas for action will be used to guide the priorities of what needs to happen in our action plan.

Jo gave a masterclass in planting tomatoes, the pair discussed peeing on lemon trees and keeping cats out of your vege beds, and Rachel talked to a Central Otago gardener who has to deal with extreme temperatures, extreme drought... and temperamental donkeys. You can also follow the conversation on Spotify and Stitcher. Let your friends know too!

Study the Deck Plan Before Booking!

Many cruises are massive complexes with lots of entertaining amenities & function rooms for guests to explore. If you a light sleeper, then you should book your cabin away from any stairs or function venues. If you get seasick easily, then you might want to book a cabin in the middle of the ship. If you want to use a certain facility frequently during your trip, i.e. swimming pool, you should book your room nearby so you don’t have to waste lots of time walking around/getting lost.

Chief executive Angie Mentis said in a statement that the increase will come into effect from January 1, 2020. Mentis said the move means its employees can work "in a way that best suits them.'' "We can empower them to grow and lead more balanced lives." More leave, extended parental leave and flexible work hours is in "keeping with our focus on wellbeing", Mentis said. "We want to support our people to do their best work for our customers." By law, any New Zealand employee is entitled to four weeks annual leave each year when they have worked for a company for 12 months. "The right to four weeks annual holidays per year applies to all types of employees," Employment New Zealand says. "In limited circumstances, some employees may be paid their annual holiday entitlement on a pay-as-you-go basis"
