Settling the Waikato with Marie Hickey
Wednesday 2 August 2023, 12pm-1pm
Whare Wananga, L2 Central City Library,
44-46 Lorne St, Auckland City Centre
also online via Zoom

In the early 1860s, the Government developed a scheme to bring large numbers of people to settle in the North Island. The reality was that a vastly reduced number of immigrants were brought out under what became known as the Waikato Immigration Scheme (not to be confused with the military settlers of the four Waikato Regiments). This talk looks at the range of records of this scheme, from passenger lists, land allocation, provision of seed, etc. What requirements did they have to fulfil to be accepted? What incentive was offered? Who was sent where? Where are records/information held?

About the speaker
Marie Hickey has worked at Research Central, Auckland Central Library for 17 years; before that, she worked at the Society of Genealogists in London for 11 years prior to returning to New Zealand. In her job, Marie undertakes research, help and advice to customers researching family, local and New Zealand history. Marie has spoken at conferences, family history groups, and library groups and regularly presents at the annual Auckland Family History Expo held each August. At least one of her talks has been recorded and can be found on Auckland Libraries’ YouTube Channel.

To attend in "Settling the Waikato" in person, please book via Eventfinda;
www.eventfinda.co.nz...

Register to attend via Zoom for this event:

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the event.

For New Zealand Family History Month
Marie will also be speaking at the Auckland Family History Expo 11-13 August, at the Fickling Convention Centre.

Speaking of which, what's up with the major repair work presently being undertaken on Glenvar Road, please inform the thousands of residence who are affected by the ineptitude of Waka Kotahi which decision maker (please stand up) within Waka Kotahi decided that while the road lets not use our common sense and proceed with the long overdue 15yr plan to straighten and align Glenvar with Lonely Track, put in the Traffic Lights, and carry out your civic duty to do the best possible job that you've been elected to do, surely this is a "no Brainer"

This is in full working order, nothing wrong with it. We are moving to a smaller place and won't have room for it.
Two people will be needed to carry it away, sorry but I won't be able to help. No collection Sunday, I'll be away for most of the day.
