Coastal hazard advisory (Thursday 1 May)

Communications from Hastings District Council

HBRC has people and equipment on standby and will update this post should the situation change. Please see the below update from Hawke's Bay Regional Council regarding high sea swells and their likely impacts on Hawke’s Bay river mouths and the southern coast (from south of Porangahau up to Cape Kidnappers in particular).

As a precautionary measure, Hastings District Council is closing (or recommending that people leave) the following three coastal reserves where overnight camping is permitted by certified self-contained vehicles:

1. Evers-Swindell Reserve
2. Haumoana Domain
3. Clifton Road Reserve

Note, overnight camping is not permitted at Waimārama and Ocean Beach reserves and these reserves are locked at night regardless.

At this stage, we ask residents to stay alert and review their emergency plans in case sea levels rise or other weather-related issues occur.

We’ll continue to monitor the situation throughout the evening and into tomorrow.

Remember:
- In the event of an emergency, please phone 111 immediately.
- For ALL Hastings District Council-related issues (e.g. roading) please phone our call centre on (06) 871 5000. This is a 24/7 service.
- Keep an eye on the HB Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Heretaunga, and Hawke's Bay Regional Council Facebook pages for more information and updates.

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

In The Post’s opinion piece on the developments set to open across Aotearoa in 2026, John Coop suggests that, as a nation, we’re “allergic to exuberance.”

We want to know: Are we really allergic to showing our excitement?

Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
