Funds for book publication in Afghanistan
Dear colleagues and friends,
I hope this message finds you well. I am Mohammad Rafi Fazli a refugee surgeon from Afghanistan currently living in Auckland New Zealand
Since the Taliban took control over Afghanistan, huge changes have happened to many aspects of life there. Many educated people have left Afghanistan, universities were closed, numbers of students were halved, women were forced to stay home, business were bankrupted and many more.
This situation is rapidly deteriorating day by day especially for women which is extremely disappointing,. Women are denied access to universities, libraries, shops and other educational places which negatively impacts on the entire family’s life and their future.
Almost all of the employees of the previous government have been fired. Obviously this incudes many women - often the only breadwinner of the family.
Female doctors, nurses, and medical students now have very limited access to medical books and most of their medical education.
We must help these medical people in Afghanistan especially the women in health related areas. Thereby we can help the families. To help the doctors, nurses and medical students who have limited access to health books in Afghanistan, I would like to publish a book on paediatric surgery for them.
As a MD, FACS, general surgeon, university professor ( currently, Honorary Senior lecturer at the University of Auckland), attendee of many international trainings and congresses and with a 15 year experience in health related areas in Afghanistan, I have translated, compiled and written a surgery book. Much of this was compiled when I was in Afghanistan .
The book includes updated references and is focused on pathologies of Afghanistan. The book was about to be published by Ghalib university where I was teaching surgery in 2021, but due to political changes I left Afghanistan along with many colleagues. After leaving Afghanistan, I contacted the university concerning publication of the book, but due to the problems mentioned above, they are under great financial pressure ( two thirds of their students left the university) so they are presently unable to publish the book.
Therefore, I am searching to find funds to publish this book. Of course it will be dedicated to female Afghan doctors. If any organizations, individuals, charities, or women celebrities, would like to help to publish this book. I would really appreciate any assistance you can offer. I look forward to hearing from any source.

P.S: publication cost is low in Afghanistan, and anyone is interested I will share the costs.

Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
