As we pass the shortest day and the Matariki star cluster (Pleiades) rises in our sky, it is a time to reflect on the year that has passed and new year just beginning as the days begin to lengthen. At Thames Museum we have Makariki activities for all ages - come along and enjoy! Our Matariki is a combined event with Thames South School te Kura o te Kauaeranga - thank you teachers and tamariki! Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
