Poll: Have you come across any giant wasp nests recently?
A large wasp nest, originally the size of a two-person tent, has been discovered in Auckland’s Waitākere Ranges.
Found in the Karekare beach area of the regional park, it is believed to have been expanding for up to two years and would have been home to tens of thousands of wasps.
Sarah Gibbs, Auckland Council’s senior ecological advisor, said it was one of the largest seen in a long time.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
