St James Church - Unveiling and Blessing of the memorial plaque and name panels. Easter Monday - 22nd April @ 2pm
Public Notice and Invitation.
As this graveyard in earlier days was for all people (not just Anglicans) we would like to reach as many people as possible. I would be very grateful if you could forward all of this email (and attached invitation) to anyone you think may be interested.
Over many years we have been researching the names of those buried in our historic graveyard in the city precinct. All our earlier records were lost when the third St James church burned down in 1946. Although there are only 171 visible headstones, we now know there are 820 of our church family and other notable citizens, such as former mayors and politicians, buried there.
We have upgraded our information panels in our two lychgates and are also installing special name stands naming all 820 people, and also the12 parishioners whose graves were washed away when the first St James church, situated in Aglionby, was washed away in a flood. We are also unveiling a memorial plaque recognising those buried in this sacred space but whose graves are no longer seen.
The HCC Mayor and Rev. Peter Benge will lead a small ceremony, unveiling the memorial and acknowledging the 832 people, on Easter Monday, April the 22nd at 2pm followed by afternoon tea. We would be delighted if you, too, could be with us on this special occasion.
