Grant application for a new generator

SSO Jono Ashman from Wellington Operational Support

Wellington Operational Support Unit is a volunteer Fire and Emergency NZ Brigade that has served the community for over 118 years.

Based out of Kilbirnie Fire Station we respond to a variety of emergency incidents across the Wellington area.

We are supplied with most equipment from Fire and Emergency NZ however, on occasion, we ask for support to purchase additional equipment to perform our duties more safely and efficiently.

One of our core duties is to provide scene lighting at emergency incidents such as fires, evacuations and cordons.

To do this we carry two generators – one large 5KVA Honda Generator and one Honda EU20i Inverter Generator (it is vital that we carry two generators so that we can deploy them to multiple locations as required).

We are applying for a grant to purchase a new Honda EU22i Inverter Generator to replace our lager 5KVA generator because it is too heavy for safe and flexible operation.

The large 5KVA generator requires 2-4 crew members to carry and has caused a number of near miss accidents due to its weight and bulk.

The smaller Honda generators are much quieter, can be carried safely by one person and, if we carry two, they can be used in tandem to provide additional power.

If we receive this grant it will allow us deploy electrical generation and scene lighting more safely and efficiently at emergency incidents.

Our Brigade is dedicated to helping our community and supporting frontline emergency services in times of need.
