Alexandra pool closure in the school holidays - what a time to decide to do maintenance!

Jo from Cromwell

A planned week-long closure at Alexandra’s Molyneux Aquatic Centre has had to be extended to a fortnight due to a hold up with a part.

The pool facility has been closed since Monday 9 July and work has been progressing on filter cleaning, recalibration of chemical dosing, an electrical board upgrade and other minor repairs and maintenance.

Parks and Recreation Manager Gordon Bailey said that just prior to the planned closure one of the two compressor units that heat the pool failed. The pool complex was able to cope on the second compressor until the closure, and a new unit was ordered and arrived for installation during the shutdown period.

“Unfortunately during the installation process it was discovered that the oil balancing unit wasn’t operating and a new one was required, which has to come from Australia. So despite the best efforts of our contractors we will be unable to reopen the pool now until Friday 20 July.”

Bailey said that council realised the closure falling during the school holidays was unpopular timing with many.

“We know it is inconvenient. There is no ideal time to shut our doors, but it is necessary. We have to factor in many things including the availability of contractors to do the highly technical work required as well as disruption to regular bookings and swim lessons. We will take on board public feedback on this closure in our planning for any future closure periods.”

Meanwhile Cromwell Swim Centre was also due to close for its winter maintenance on Monday 16 July for three days but this has now shifted out a day. It will close on Tuesday 17 July and reopen on Friday 20 July.

Customers who hold concession tickets for the pools will be credited for the days closed at pool the concession was purchased from.

To celebrate the pools’ reopening, entry fees will be at a special reduced price for the final weekend of the winter school holidays, 21 and 22 July, at both Molineux Aquatic Centre and Cromwell Swim Centre. Adults $3, Child $1.50 and card holders $2.50.
