A rat plague is expected to explode through Southern Lakes and potentially wipe out vulnerable birdlife.

Department of Conservation operations manager Geoff Owen said the critically endangered bush canary yellowhead/mohua population at the head of Lake Wakatipu could face local extinction due to an expected plague of predators due to heavy seed fall, known as mega mast. Mohua numbers had dwindled to just 5000 nationwide, he said.

In response, DOC is planning a winter aerial 1080 operation to control rat numbers in the Dart, Caples and Routeburn valleys. A second operation in the summer might also be required.

It’s not easy growing up in New Zealand today. The Salvation Army and The Warehouse Group know that life can be tough for young people, and that's why we teamed up to develop an innovative and effective youth development programme called ‘Aspire’.

Launched in 2015, thanks to seed funding received from The Warehouse Group's 2014 Suppliers Dinner and ongoing funding support from Warehouse Stationery, Aspire has helped more than 1000 young people develop the skills, confidence, knowledge and networks they need to successfully address challenges and achieve their goals.

From now until the end of July, donations from Warehouse Stationery customers will help support hundreds of at-risk teens who aspire to change their lives.

Sadly, this is a reality for many Kiwi families living in poverty at the moment, as they struggle through a cold winter without even the basics to survive. They are often forced to choose between providing food, warmth and shelter for their family, knowing the profound impact that going without even one of these things will have on their health and well-being.

Please support this ‘Lights On’ Winter Appeal and help keep families safe, warm and sheltered this winter.

She lacked self-confidence. ‘‘I had a negative mind set in which I had beliefs that I would never be successful at anything, with a very low self-esteem. ‘‘I made excuses because I had no motivation and little confidence and I let life pass me by even if it was a wonderful opportunity because I was so afraid of the unknown.’’

Not anymore! Prasad, 18, and the youngest in a family of five, is now working as a caregiver while studying a foundation course at NZMA for occupational therapy and has realised she ‘‘could do anything’’. She is the first in her family to go to university. The South Auckland teen has found her potential with the help of our Foundation that aims to transform young Kiwi lives.
