Support the OKE Charity

Paul Dickson from

Good Morning,

We just wanted to give you a quick update of what the OKE Charity has been up too this last little while.

Wow, what a month March was for OKE, from the very first day of the month it was all go. On the 1st of the month, OKE managed its first working bee of 2017 at Bairds Mainfreight Primary School. It was another successful day, transforming their old school garden into a new productive space, where the kids can enjoy all the amazing benefits of having a space to grow. Our Growing A Future initiative provides schools with pretty much everything that is needed for a school to get growing; raised beds, greenhouse, soil, tools for the kids and teachers and most importantly, the time to pull the whole working bee together. We were very fortunate to have Mitre10 Mega Manukau donate feijoa trees to be planted on the day.

Straight after we had kicked off Bairds Mainfreight with their garden, the OKE Squad started to plan our second working bee of the year. This week we built a garden at Weymouth Primary, which was just off the chart crazy good. For this working bee, not only did we have amazing local volunteers, we also had staff from Crombie Lockwood help out and the entire Vodafone Warriors squad helped out as well! The awesome news is that with this garden completed, OKE has now provided 2,500 kids with access to a school garden! BOOM :)

Also this month, we supported the crackin’ Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust with their brilliant Eye On Nature event. It was great fun being part of the workshops, teaching the kids how to use recycled containers to plant up seeds and be part of the Family Day which saw thousands of locals have fun learning about food and where it comes from.

The big goal for OKE in 2017, is to get four schools kicked off with new gardens, with two down, we need your support to fund the next two! We have a great new Donation page all setup, just head on over to the OKE website, have a read about what we're about and feel free to donate.

Thanks for taking the time to read this quick hello and I hope you enjoy the rest of your week.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
