Risks to Thames From Sea Level Rise
In a recent presentation to the Thames Community Board I set out how Thames is at risk from sea level rise from both groundwater flooding, and from direct flooding from the sea. These risks are made worse because parts of the Thames foreshore are sinking. Latest projections say it is very likely that the sea will rise between 0.2m and 0.4 m by 2050 regardless of efforts made in the next few decades to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Even a 0.2 m rise seems likely to cause worse groundwater flooding in Thames. As a community we need to face up to these challenges, and make sure our town gets the funding and expertise it needs so we can plan and adapt.
