Trust faces $11,000 repair bill after vandals damage unfinished section of Hauraki Rail Trail
Vandals have caused $11,000 of damage to the new section of the Hauraki Rail Trail before it's officially open.
The damage has been caused by unauthorised heavy vehicles using 1.1km of the trail in Pipiroa, on the east side of the Piako River Bridge, about 15km from Thames.
Hauraki Rail Trail Charitable Trust general manager Diane Drummond said the trust was investigating the damage to the trail on top of a stopbank in a fragile coastal area.
