Sea Level Rise - Should Whitianga Waterways Be Expanded?
New Government Guidelines require new coastal subdivisions to be "stress tested" against a sea level rise of at least 1.9 m above current high tide levels. Whitianga Waterways has just applied for 72 new canal housing lots. The 1.9m benchmark could result in much of Whitianga town being submerged.
Should millions of dollars be spent on such new development and Council infrastructure? Should purchasers be invited buy expensive properties which may be under water for this or the next generation?
This crucial decision-making must be made today, not next year or next decade. Councils can no longer pretend that climate change and sea-level rise is something that future councils must deal with.
