An update from Hauraki District Council

Julie Kaio Reporter from Hauraki Herald

Whiritoa

Slips on SH25 either side of the beachside settlement of Whiritoa has isolated the small community and left a number of people stranded in vehicles. A number of properties have been flooded within the township and the local fire brigade has evacuated affected people to the local surf lifesaving club. Contractors are working to clear the slips.

Kaiaua

Wide spread flooding in the Kaiaua area has closed the East Coast Road north of Kaiaua School and Findlay Road south of the Kaiaua township at Miranda. Around 10 houses have been flooded and evacuees are being looked after by friends and family. Flood waters are expected to peak with the high tide around 4pm today. Sand bags are available at the Kaiaua Fire Station for residents wanting to put them around their houses before then. Best access to the fire station is via Pohutukawa Road.

Some residents may wish to self-evacuate to family and friends. Anyone planning to leave their home is asked to please text their address to 021 190 5878 so this information can be passed on to the local Fire Service. The Kaiaua Marae is open to anyone in need of temporary accommodation and the Fire Service will be monitoring the situation and providing assistance where needed.

Sightseers have caused some concern in the area this morning. Anyone who is not a Kaiaua resident is asked to please avoid the area until emergency services give the all clear.

Waihi

The Barry Road bridge has been flooded and the road is closed. The bridge will need a structural inspection before it can be reopened.

Karangahake

A blocked culvert in the Karangahake gorge was cleared quickly and the road has been open despite media reports. The river has risen but is not yet a problem. Waikato Regional Council is monitoring all river levels.

Paeroa to Thames

SH25 to Thames via the Kopu-Kauearanga bridge is now open to one lane

Farmers

Rural Support Trust is asking Farmers with information about what is happening in their area or if they are experiencing any issues to please give them a call on 0800 00 83 33
