poisonous Karaka berries

Diana from Tikipunga

I didn't know this, so I researched. The unripe berries are toxic to humans, but not the ripe ones. The kernels are toxic unless treated ( steam heated):

This one is pretty simple. You're a Neighbourly member so connecting with your community is obviously pretty important to you. So this tip is more of a challenge; this year (or this weekend!) make it your mission to meet someone new living near you.

Here's a few things you can do to get you started:
- use the Neighbours Directory to find neighbours on your street.
- introduce yourself on Neighbourly to those living in your neighbourhood. Just a few words about yourself and what brought you here.
- Give something away or sell something! A Neighbourly exchange gives you a chance to meet someone new.
- just head out the door and knock on someone else's!
______
Remember 86% of Kiwis want to get to know their neighbours better, but just don't see them around much (71%). Take the first step!

Some are saying the unsettled weather over December and early January is almost the norm nowadays , with the weather we expect in summer not really kicking in until February and March. There are several ways of doing this which would still allow the normal Christmas and New Year stat days being observed, but the lengthy 3-5 week break would be delayed most likely to mid February to mid March. Are you keen to do your bit towards keeping New Zealand litter and pollution free?

If want to do something positive for the environment and have a few hours free then why not become a recycling ambassador for the Waitangi Day celebrations.

CBEC EcoSolutions are keen to hear from anyone willing to volunteer at Waitangi on February 6. The recycling ambassadors will help visitors sort their rubbish into the right bins and in doing so help send out a message of the importance of minimising waste.

Environmental educator Anouk van Douzel says EcoSolutions is aiming to make Waitangi Day a zero waste event by 2020.

Zero waste maximises recycling, reduces consumption of goods creating waste and ensures all products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled back into nature or the marketplace.

"This whole system approach includes recycling but is not limited to it," she says. "The successfulness of the day relies almost fully on the volunteers who are willing to give a few hours of their time."

Van Douzel says the group has managed to divert many tonnes of recycling and food waste from land fills over the years they have been attending the event.

Training and lunch are provided, as is transport to and from the event or fuel costs can be reimbursed if this is more suitable. Phone 09 438 8710 or 027 254 5462.
