On Thursday, 15th May at 6pm WFS will be screening The Outrun, a powerful film based on Amy Liptrot’s best selling memoir about a woman's return to her home in Scotland.

Our 8pm screening is the heartwarming documentary from Bhutan about census workers who travel the country chatting with the locals about their satisfaction with life, Agent of Happiness.

PLEASE NOTE: After the screening on the 15th May, the next WFS screening will not be until Thursday 19th June as the Forum North venue is not available.

Films are screened at Forum North, 7 Rust Ave Whangarei in the Expo Hall.

You can also renew your memberships for 2025. The annual fee remains at $30 and includes one free ticket.

THE OUTRUN
Scotland, 2024, Drama
112 mins, Rated M (strong language)
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Paapa Essiedu, Stephen Dillane, Saskia Reeves

Based on Amy Liptrot’s best selling memoir of the same name, Rona is a recovering alcoholic, who returns to her home, the Orkney Islands in Scotland, after hitting rock bottom in London.

But once she is home, Rona finds it difficult to relate. She has had to deal with anarchy her whole life - her father has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

This movie deftly takes the viewer on her journey of loss and addiction and back again in two intertwined stories - past and present that slip along next to each other, each revealing themselves, piece by piece. And Saoirse Ronan's performance embraces both stories with utter conviction.

View the trailer at: www.youtube.com...

Showing at Forum North, 7 Rust Ave Whangarei on Thursday, 15th May at 6pm and Thursday, 26th June at 8pm.

Tickets: Door sales only. $10 WFS members. Non-members pay $5 extra as an Associate Membership fee per film. (Total of $15)

All welcome. Cash only please – no Eftpos available.

Local elections are different this year

It’s a local elections year, and the Deputy Electoral Officer for Whangārei District, Nicolene Pestana, says there are two key differences to look out for: a new way of voting called ‘Single Transferrable Vote’ (STV), and a poll on our Māori Ward.

“The STV voting process is easy. Instead of ticking your favourite candidate, this year you’ll be asked to number the candidates from the one you like the most (which would be your number 1) to the one you like the least. You do not have to rank every candidate."
1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣

A formula is used to distribute votes once successful candidates have passed the ‘quota’, which allows your second and third (and so on) votes to count, rather than being "lost" as they would be in a First Past the Post system.

“The second thing to keep an eye out for is the Māori Ward Poll, which will be posted to you as part of your voting documents. This is an important question for everyone, regardless of your ethnicity or which electoral roll you’re on."
The options are: 🅰️ ‘I vote to keep the Māori ward/ constituency’, or 🅱️‘I vote to remove the Māori ward/constituency’.

We're creating a plan for a "Knowledge Precinct", and we want your help if you live, work, play or do anything else in this area.

The knowledge precinct is the latest of the central city areas to have a plan created, following the Waterfront, Hīhīaua, and City Core precinct plans. These plans guide development to shape the character of each area, building on the strengths and themes of each.

The Knowledge Precinct features themes of life-long education, performing arts, wellness, and civic engagement. We think development in the area, especially of a "knowledge hub" at Forum North, can build on that character. What do you think?
