Good People

The film night for TUESDAY 23rd September (NOT Thursday) for WFS will be in the Capitaine Bougainville Theatre at Forum North, 7 Rust Ave Whangarei.

At 6pm, WFS will screen the inspiring documentary about a couple who attempt to breathe new life into their dying family farm, WILDING.

Our 8pm screening is the gentle, intelligent and profoundly beautiful film from Georgia, CROSSING.

WILDING
UK, Documentary, 89 mins
Starring: Isabella Tree, Charlie Burrell
Directed by: David Allen

Based on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book of the same name, this charming documentary tells the incredible story of a young couple who bet on nature for the future of their failing, four-hundred-year-old estate.

Aiming to revitalise their lands, Isabella and Charlie set to work utilising a completely untested yet ground breaking vision.

They begin by ripping down fences as they return their land to nature, entrusting its recovery to a motley mix of animals, both tame and wild.

It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most fascinating and significant rewilding projects in Europe.

“Tree and Burrell’s extraordinary scheme will give hope to anyone concerned about the challenges the Earth faces after centuries of industrial farming.” – London Film Festival

View the trailer at: www.youtube.com...

Showing at Forum North, 7 Rust Ave Whangarei on TUESDAY (Not Thursday), 23rd September at 6pm and Thursday 2nd October at 8pm.

Tickets: Door sales only. $10 WFS members. Non-members pay $5 extra as an Associate Membership fee per film (Total of $15).

After 50 years without a sighting, the rare and quirky sailback houndshark has finally been spotted again in Papua New Guinea!

Because it’s been seen so rarely, scientists still know very little about it. But its striking features are already sparking debate about whether it should be given special protection, and some have even argued it could become an icon species for Papua New Guinea.

At a time when we so often hear about species disappearing, the return of this little shark is a reminder that nature can surprise us ... and that there’s always reason to hope.

You can read more about the sailback shark here

We hope this brings a smile!

Thought you were past your prime to become a rockstar? Don't sell yourself - or your health - short.

Research published this year has demonstrated that playing music helps keep dementia at bay - no matter how late in life the skill is picked up.

The basic idea behind this research is not new - we know that 'cognitive reserve' (learning new things) plays a big role in delaying mental slowdown. But the reminder that "it is never too late" is welcome ...

We hope this news brings a smile!

The film night for Thursday 18th September for WFS will be in the Capitaine Bougainville Theatre at Forum North, 7 Rust Ave Whangarei.

At 6pm, WFS will screen the gentle, intelligent and profoundly beautiful film from Georgia, CROSSING.

Our 8pm screening is THE RETURN starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. Based on Homer's Odyessy, it is a powerful story of a king returning to his family after years away and attempting to unite a fractured nation.

CROSSING
Georgia/Turkey (subtitles), 2024,
Drama, 105 mins, Rated M
Cast: Mzia Arabuli, Lucas Kankava and Deniz Dumanli.
Director: Levan Akin

In Georgia, a retired history teacher, Lia has been working day and night to keep a promise to her now-dead sister. She has made it her mission to find her long-lost niece, Tekla.

Tekla disappeared some time ago, supposedly to Turkey. It happened when her husband insisted that Tekla leave and never return when she came out as trans.

In Istanbul, Lia does her best but struggles to make progress. It almost feels like Tekla doesn't want to be found. But then Lia meets Evrim, a lawyer who says she will use her contacts to help her find Tekla.

"Crossing marks another humanist triumph for writer-director Levan Akin." - Metacritic
