So I was quite surprised when I received my voting papers for the NEPT election and discovered that online voting was an available option. Great - I did my research, made up my mind who to vote for, and went online.
Well, it's probably a good example of how NOT to implement online voting :-(
The welcome page was nice enough, but the ballot page itself looked very crude and basic, as if the so-called style sheet, which defines the styles and visual elements of a web page, was broken or missing. But it was a secure website, so I ticked my boxes and sent it off ... and didn't get any kind of feedback if my vote had been received. Hmmm. So I decided to click on the link for the feedback page and wrote up all my issues and complaints and clicked on the send button ... only to receive a timeout after a minute or so. Well, it happens sometimes, so I tried again ... another timeout. I gave up.
I had written in my earlier posts that online voting needed to be done professionally and securely, to be acceptable. The NEPT voting website felt like shoddy work, done in a hurry and not tested properly. I'm pretty sure that my vote wasn't lost, at least as sure as if I had sent it in by mail, but a professional design, with a ballot page identical or at least very similar to the printed version, and a confirmation that the vote was received, plus a working feedback page is the minimum we voters should be able to expect.
Has anybody else voted online and had similar or different (better or worse) experiences?

I have been up to some writing and research and I got my first book completed and published earlier this year. Since then (as a result of mum wanting to follow her fathers footsteps) I have undertaqken a pilgrimage that has led to my current project - I have come to the final stages in the reseach I am doing on my grandfather's WW2 Battle of Crete and POW journey - it is a monumental task and although the work rises up before me - it is a task I am enjoying!
However to complete these final stages I need to return to Crete and Crowthorne ... I am hoping I can do this in the summer school holiday period so it will not interfere with paid work which is something I must return to ...
I am writing a book transcribed from my grandfather's diary that starts at the point he left Kalamata in a row boat heading for Crete with only planks as oars...his words are complimented by my own that have been written on the same date 75 years later in the place he was ... to wrap all this up I have researched the historical facts given on this time and place to give a greater perspective on the situation. Finally the two (old) men (and their families) we met that were pivotal to all this are sharing what they know - since they never knew we existed prior to arriving in their neck of the woods - their stories and contributions are still in the pipeline.
However one of these men is very ill and due to his illness (terminal cancer) he has invited me to return to the UK to complete the final research he has undetaken on my project with him. While a return to the UK was in my plans the date was a way off as I need to return to paid work to save the money for this.
His request however has changed this and as the book I am writing is ultimately a gift to NZ history and will be given along with the original diary to Te Papa or to the NZ Military museum or the Dunedin Library I am calling for a little finacial assistance from everyone and anyone to make this journey possible.
If you think you could spare even the minimum Give-A-Little pledge and want to donate this to my work which involves this trip to the UK - I (and this man, especially) would be very grateful.
I understand if you can not or do not want to whatever the reasons.
I am rather - though - hoping you might just be able to Give-A-Little and be part of this very special journey I am tasked with. Thanks for reading - please share if you know others who might be interested.
The Give-A-Little page is here: givealittle.co.nz...
Thank you .....

Twelve Northland women have become "calendar girls" to help fund raise for breast cancer support in Northland.
The women - all breast cancer survivors - feature in the Strength and Beauty calendar which was launched on October 28.

Why not support this good cause by buying a calendar from Regent New World or Sportman's Choice.

Choices - Pharmaceutical or Natural - New NHS Bill may restrict your choices

We started women's and children's (girls) refuges in Western Australia and corresponding independent refuges for fathers and (sons). We also rented 10 houses at a time for those who we had assisted to become sober. Over 10 years, as well as drying out the majority of alcoholics and drug addicts that we housed over that period, both my husband and I were honoured with awards including the Young Australian of the Year Award. The WA government paid out appox $8,000,000 for buildings and infrastructure to continue the project and we left to shift with our five children New Zealand, where I was born. The numbers cared for over the ten years were approximately 20,000.
Recently I have done intense research and writing on natural cures and find there are so many cures for so many people, it is entirely ridiculous not to use the benefits of nature and logic, rather than chemical experiment and funerals.
I read a very recent article on natural supplements and the NHS Bill and I would be interested in speaking with Beverley Aldridge (the author) who cares, in my opinion, to fight for peoples rights and lives. If she, or anyone else interested in the freely available use of supplements or natural products would like to ring me on 022 136 1898, I would be pleased to meet with them.

Hi Neighbours
Don't worry - this post is not about smelly socks or effluents. I'm only trying to raise some awareness regarding a very little-known and therefore often-ignored problem - being allergic to perfumes, fragrances, after-shaves, air fresheners and other good-smelling scents. My poor wife is suffering from that condition, and it has had quite an impact on our personal and social life.
At home we try to live fragrance-free, which is not as easy as it sounds, because there is not much choice when it comes to scent-free products. We can get most of what we need from ecostore, but in some areas there is just no suitable product available. For example we're still hunting for a fragrance-free shaving cream for myself, so that I don't have to leave our house for the next two hours after each shave, until the perfume wears off.
Shopping in stores and pharmacies with a perfume department or just being in rooms or spaces that use air freshener has become quite tough. Working with other people in a shared space, visiting with friends and neighbours, attending events or meetings, or going out for dinner or to the movies has also become a problem because unfortunately many people use scents quite liberally. Most perfumes are actually designed to be used sparingly, because they are quite potent, and only to be applied to certain areas of your skin, the so-called pulse points. But over time, as you become accustomed to your favourite scent, you might actually start using more and more of it, particularly if you measure the amount by or own ever-increasing threshold when you can smell it on yourself. You should only ever notice someone else's perfume when you're getting close to them, but many people are actually trailing a cloud of scent that you can still smell long after they've left or passed you. Here is a good article about how to apply perfume efficiently:
www.wikihow.com...
In some countries, like the United States and Canada, scent-related allergies are already well understood and recognised, but in New Zealand there seems to be very little understanding or sympathy for that kind of condition at present, because my wife is often facing astonishment, incomprehension, or even ignorance when she explains her problem. Hopefully this little article is helpful to increase people's awareness of it and maybe even prompts the odd person to become a bit more mindful of their scents and use of scented products.
Thanks for reading, and for those of you who are interested to learn a bit more, here is a collection of links to articles that show that I'm not making this stuff up:
