Subject: Follow-Up on Pohe Island Accessible Playground Proposal
Dear Councillors,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to follow up on the email I sent to all councillors on May 8, 2025, regarding my proposal to create New Zealand’s most accessible playground at Pohe Island, Whangārei. The email outlined a well-considered plan, and I sincerely appreciate the five responses I’ve received so far.

However, I am disappointed that nine councillors have yet to acknowledge or respond to my request. Given this lack of engagement, I struggle to see how a five-minute verbal presentation—as suggested in some replies—would be a productive use of time if basic communication remains unanswered.
This project deserves your attention. To ensure transparency and accessibility, I have created a dedicated website, Pohe Island Whangārei, where all the details shared with councillors are now publicly available under the Projects tab. Many of you know me personally and understand my advocacy for a more inclusive world for disabled children. This playground is not just an idea—it’s an achievable milestone for our community.
A simple reply is not just courtesy; it’s a basic sign of respect for the time and effort invested in this initiative. I urge those who have not yet responded to reconsider and engage in this important conversation.
Let’s work together to make Pohe Island a beacon of accessibility and inclusion. I look forward to your responses.

Kind regards,
Glen McMillan

NZ Civil Defence are testing the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system on Sunday 25 May, between 6-7pm ⚠️📲

If you have a hidden second phone for your safety, we recommend turning it off or putting it in flight mode for the duration of the test (6-7pm on Sunday 25 May) to ensure it’s not discovered when the nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert is sent.

Some mobile devices set to silent mode will still emit a sound when the Emergency Mobile Alert test is sent, so switching to flight mode or turning off your device is the only way to avoid the loud sound of the alert.

You can find more information about the Emergency Mobile Alert system, including a factsheet and list of FAQs at www.getready.co.nz

STV. Who wants it?

Well it's coming and I for one welcome it. In STV you rank the candidates in order of preference. If you like just a few candidates then you give ranks 1, 2, 3, ... to your preferred people and don't rank the others. If you really like First Past The Post then just vote for your choice with a '1' and leave the rest blank.

Australia used a stupid variant where you had to rank all the candidates. This meant that people complained that they were forced by law to vote for people they didn't want. But just because Australians messed up the system does not mean that we shouldn't do it properly.

The real result of this change is that it's possible for a stranger to become elected to the Council. Of course electioneering is hard work but who wants to elect a lazy time server?

Poll: Is it illegal to have fog lights on when there's no fog?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The answer is yes, it is illegal. And yet in New Zealand it's fairly common to see drivers hitting the road with their fog lights on when it's simply dark.

Those who have sat their written drivers test recently will be in the know, but be honest, did you know it was illegal?

After a 2-minute outage this Friday 16 May 2025, these striking new timber reservoirs will start supplying water to the Three Mile Bush area.

They're an expansion of our water infrastructure (not a renewal) on a site with natural elevation for efficient water-pressure. Together they hold 1500m³ of treated water, enough to fill a bathtub about 5000 times.

Timber tank reservoirs such as these are like giant barrels for holding treated water ready to be piped to nearby customers. They have a PVC lining to keep the water isolated from the wood surface, and metal bands around them to stop them from expanding outwards. They can be built much larger than plastic tanks and have a much lower carbon footprint than concrete tanks.

These are the first timber tanks of their size in Whangarei District.
