Whangārei Future Development Strategy
The Whangarei community really helped to shape our District’s 'Future Development Strategy'. We saw thousands of comments on social media, more than 100 formal submissions, and many face-to-face or online meetings and stakeholder workshops.
After taking on your feedback, Whangarei District Council and Northland Regional Council have now jointly adopted the Future Development Strategy. Thank you to everyone who took part in this process!
The strategy tackles big issues of population growth, infrastructure choices, and how and where Whangarei will grow over the next 30 years. We are aiming for are a Whangarei that supports thriving communities, protects our environment and builds resilience for the future.
These top-line directives were broadly supported by the community:
🏗️ Build in existing town centres
🏘️ Open up a full range of housing types
🚌 Create a transport systems for growth
💧 Make full use of infrastructure
The full strategy is available here with submission reports and FAQs:
