West Coast landfill cleanup too toxic for volunteers

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

Toxins near the scene of a West Coast landfill that spewed decades of rubbish into a river have made it too hazardous for volunteers.

Extreme weather caused an old Westland District Council dump to erode on March 26, with rubbish floating downstream, washing up about 300 kilometres along South Westland's pristine beaches and strewn through the native bush.

The areas immediately below the landfill and out to the Fox and Franz Josef River mouths were identified as hazardous. Specialist assistance had been sought to handle those areas, Westland mayor Bruce Smith said.

Poll: Are Kiwis allergic to “exuberance”? 🥝

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Is it time to lean into a more optimistic view of the place we call home? As big projects take shape and new opportunities emerge, perhaps it’s worth asking whether a little more confidence (and enthusiasm!) could do us some good.
