Puerto Rican couple 'adopt' a granny while stuck in Kaikōura during lockdown
A Puerto Rican couple who "adopted" a Kaikōura grandma during lockdown have sparked a movement to help more of the town's elderly residents.
Efrain Vega de Varona and Ingrid Marie Rivera, who normally reside in Los Angeles, had the "immense pleasure" of getting stuck in Kaikōura as the global coronavirus pandemic hit, and decided to volunteer in the community.
Each week during the lockdown, they called 91-year-old Nat for her shopping list and delivered the items to her door.
