Poor water quality affects all of us - doing nothing is not an option.

Population growth and climate change are putting increasing pressure on our water supply and many of our water pipes are leaky or broken and will be costly to fix. A number of our urban streams and rivers are in poor health, are highly modified or are piped. Poor water quality makes our streams and rivers unsafe to swim and impacts mahinga kai (food).

Join the conversation on water with the Whaitua Committee! Pop over to our stall at the Island Bay Festival Day in the Bay 2020 on Sunday 9 February. See you there!

"Cheaper bus fares for off-peak travellers (Posted on 4 February 2020)
Greater Wellington Regional Council today agreed to an earlybird off-peak bus fare trial, making travel cheaper for morning commuters.

Greater Wellington Regional Transport Committee Chair Roger Blakeley says the trial, beginning on 10 February, will provide off-peak Snapper fares for Metlink bus services prior to 7am on working days.

“Our public transport network is experiencing patronage growth at a rate that is much higher than expected. Over the last calendar year there was a 6.8 per cent increase for bus, and a 4.8 per cent increase for rail.

“It is great to be part of an agile council which is able to quickly offer and evaluate trials like this to unlock capacity on the network.

“This trial means customers who are happy to travel earlier will be rewarded with good value for a good service,” Cr Blakeley says.

Peak bus fares currently apply to all services in the morning on working days, from just after 5am until 9am.

“With spare capacity available on early morning services, this opportunity will incentivise passengers to travel earlier than 7am, spreading the demand over a wider period in the morning peak.

“The off-peak fare is 25 per cent cheaper than the base Snapper fare, and between 40 to 50 per cent cheaper than adult cash fares, so the earlybird fare is a win-win,” Cr Blakeley says.

Metlink General Manager Greg Pollock says the trial has the full support of bus operators and the NZ Transport Agency.

“Our ongoing and planned improvements to the Wellington City Bus Network review will help to improve supply and service levels in Wellington.

“However, capacity remains an issue while we continue to deal with a national bus driver shortage, so this earlybird fare reduction will help spread the load so our passengers can have a more comfortable journey,” Mr Pollock says.

The trial will apply to adult Snapper customers only, and will not be available for cash, Super Gold, or rail passengers.

MOA POINT SLUDGE UPDATE – TRUCK MOVEMENTS

Thanks to the local community for their continued patience and understanding as we continue with our trucking operations from the Moa Point treatment plant and the Southern Landfill.

We will be adjusting the route due to Island Bay’s Day in the Bay this weekend, with the trucks following an alternative route along State Highway 1 and up through Brooklyn (pictured below). Trucks will use this route from 6am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday, with trucks following the existing route outside of these hours. We expect about 5 to 6 trucks each way per hour during this period.

From Thursday through to Sunday, we will also be staggering the truck movements, as well as reducing the number of trucks on the road.

We apologise for any inconvenience this additional traffic may cause, but we are working to prevent the need to discharge the sludge into Cook Strait while we work to repair the pipeline to the Southern Landfill.

Our waterways and the life they support are important to lots of people, and I want to understand what you think should be done to make sure future generations are able to enjoy and protect our freshwater.

We need your help in protecting the health and mauri of our waterways, which are under pressure from increasing population. We need solutions that require real change in the way we interact with water if we want it to be safe for our kids. And we need to think long-term about how and who pays for these solutions.
Want to join me on this journey? Connect with us to talk about what we can do together. You can reach me at whaitua@gw.govt.nz or connect with me through Linkedin www.linkedin.com....

Following our removal of the health warning signs in Owhiro Bay, we would like to provide clarification on the condition of the Bay.

These signs were removed as per our protocols for the reopening of the beach. A source of the spike in contamination was identified and the sampling at the long term beach monitoring site had returned to normal.

We acknowledge that our communication could have been better as removing the warning signs implies that the Owhiro Stream, that crosses the beach, is safe for swimming in. Owhiro Stream, like many urban waterways, has a long history of contamination and is regularly unsafe for swimming in. Improving the quality of Owhiro Stream will require a coordinated and long term programme of works.

We have taken immediate action to correct the lack of information, and yesterday placed warning signs at the stream mouth at Owhiro Bay. Our operations team are preparing for continued investigations in the catchment to see if there is another fault or cross-connection that we can find and resolve.
