Women, Music and Storytelling

The Team from Alexander Turnbull Library

Join us in a celebration of women’s storytelling and music making
for NZ Music Month.

Date: Thursday 31st May.
Time: Panel 6 – 7pm / Performance 7 – 8pm
Refreshments: Beer / Wine – NZ women brewers and wine makers (Cash bar)
Cost: Free event
Venue: National Library foyer

As transmitters of language and life narratives women hold a vital role in maintaining links to the past which act to fortify the present and prepare ground for the future.

Through the prism of the songs they pen five influential women song writers and performers will discuss the creative and political practice of telling and disseminating stories. Chaired by RNZ’s Kirsten Johnstone the panellists will discuss issues around gender perspective and the power of voicing autobiographical experiences. This panel discussion will shed light on the importance of telling previously untold stories, and how this very act politicises the personal.
Panellists, Ariana Tikao, Kiki Van-Newton (Hex), Ebony Lamb, Jessie Moss and Cookie (Strange Stains) will perform a selection of relevant songs after the panel discussion.
